The senior community is buzzing with news about a spelling bee designed for all those over 50 years old. It's a great way to exercise your gray cells and to participate in a nostalgic blast from the past.

The Bee Master for the main event will be Mike Sheehan, webmeister of the Senior Corner, and co-host of Words to the Wise, a program heard each Tuesday morning on WTCM, AM 580, from 9:00 to 10:00 on the Ron Jolly Show. [ wtcmradio.com ]

Each senior team will have three members. You may build your own team by inviting two friends to join you, or you may sign up at the Traverse City Senior Center and allow them to assign you to a team.

There will be two public practice rounds and one final round. The warm-up rounds are a great way to get the bugs out of your performance, but you don't have to attend them to participate in the official round.

Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. The entry fee is $5. This covers all three sessions if you wish to participate in them. Otherwise, it covers you for the Official Round. Proceeds will go to the young winner of the Regional Student Spelling Bee later this year to help defray the expenses in Washington, D.C.

To register in advance or to receive more information, call the Traverse City Senior Center at (231) 922-4911.
