MI Choice:
The future of long-term care in Michigan
MI Choice represents innovation in long-term care delivery. It allows consumers and their families to make informed choices about where they receive services. It ensures people receive only the services they need--keeping Medicaid spending under control. Average annual costs are thousands of dollars less than other types of long-term care.
Consumer choice is an approach that has worked well in other states. In Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Vermont, and Arizona, most Medicaid long-term care dollars are spent on care at home or in assisted living. These states are providing services to more people more cost-effectively, so why not here in Michigan?
In Michigan, institutional care receives more than 75% of all Medicaid long-term care dollars, and choice options are limited for Michigan families.
With a dramatically expanding population of long-term care consumers and Medicaid accounting for about 20% of the state budget, now is the time for michigan policymakers to invest in expanding MI Choice.
Rebalancing long-term care by expanding MI Choice is a concept endorsed by long-term care experts, several major Michigan newspapers, and more than 75% of Michigan residents, according to a W.K. Greene & Associates survey (February 2003).
Everyone enrolled in MI Choice is carefully screened for the services they need. Qualified professionals who are pre-screened and accountable for quality care provide MI Choice services.
MI Choice provides 13 supportive services in the home, including home health aides, private duty nursing, durable medical equipment and supplies, adult day care, and respite care. The goal is to maintain health and independence, support family caregivers, and avoid or delay costly institutionalization.
